Material Toxicity and Biocompatibility
The group is active since three decades in the field of Particle Toxicology. A multidisciplinary approach has been set up in order to identify the relationships between surface chemistry and the molecular mechanisms of toxicity of inhaled particles and fibres, such as asbestos, crystalline silica, metallic mixed dusts, environmental particles.
Taking advantage of the experience in these fields the group has been subsequently involved in the study of the potential toxicity of engineered nanoparticles and emissions from incinerators in response to the raising alarm on their possible hazard to the environment and threat to human health. Typical materials investigated are carbon nanotubes, nano-silica particles, titanium dioxide, carbonaceous particulates.

Biocovering, biodeterioration and bioremediation of asbestos.
The researches deal with the interactions of lichenized and non-lichenized fungi and plants with asbestos rich substrates, including rocks, soils and asbestos cement roofs. The effects of asbestos colonization are evaluated by examining in vitro and in the field biocovering and biodeterioration processes, addressing bioremediation strategies.
